March brought a welcome burst of energy with Maslenitsa, a festival of arts and culture rooted in Eastern European tradition, celebrating the close of winter and the arrival of spring.

Organised by Izba Arts and hosted in the beautiful Battersea Arts Centre, the exhibition curated by Ksenia Kazintseva and Margarita Makhanova brought together artists from across Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The programme spanned installation, sculpture, painting, photography, performance, poetry and zines, each work offering a different perspective on the coming of spring and the continuous search for home.

I was glad to show works from my Time Capsule series, an ongoing exploration of memory, possessions, and place rooted in my grandparents' home in Southeast Romania.

Seeing the work in conversation with artists from across the region felt fitting, a reminder of the shared threads that run through our different histories and stories.

The highlight of the week was the private view on the 11th — an evening of performances, reconnections with fellow Rethinking Eastern Europe members, and the warmth of meeting new artists from the wider community.

About Battersea Arts Centre

Battersea Arts Centre ( BAC) is the guardian of the former Battersea Town Hall, built in 1893. Over the past half-century, BAC has emerged as a dynamic hub for community creativity and experimental art. Since the 1970s, it has championed inclusive cultural participation, hosting groundbreaking theatre, participatory projects, and social initiatives that reflect the diverse voices of South West London and beyond. Through ongoing collaborations with local groups, BAC continues to redefine what a community arts centre can be while remaining rooted in radical ideas, accessible practice, and a commitment to social connection.
