We’re thrilled to bring Rethinking Eastern Europe to Brighton’s Photo Fringe 2024!
Following an open call, eight photography collectives have been selected for this year's Collectives Hub exhibition at Phoenix Art Space, each presenting a different approach to image-making and to this year’s festival theme “Common Ground”.
Join us in exploring the rich, often misrepresented complexities of this diverse region.
@re.thinking.eastern.europe presents a reimagined perspective of Eastern Europe, breaking down stereotypes and celebrating the region’s diverse identities, histories, and traditions. We explore themes of identity, memory, and shared heritage through photography, film, sculpture, and visual art. Our work reflects a deep understanding and emotional connection to Eastern Europe’s past, while creating a dialogue between tradition and contemporary life.

About the exhibition:
In the aftermath of Brexit, the UK continues to navigate complex questions surrounding identity, belonging, and community. These issues resonate globally, where shifts in political landscapes and rising nationalist movements add further layers to discussions of unity and division.
Our exhibition shines a light on the shared experiences and cultural intersections between Eastern European communities and the wider society. Through this exploration, we uncover the rich tapestry of identities, histories, and traditions that define Eastern Europe, while seeking to build bridges between the diverse experiences of these communities and those within the UK.
By delving into themes of identity, memory, and shared heritage, we aim to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of the complexities present in both regions.
Through photography, collage, film, and sculpture, we invite viewers to reflect on the power of unity and diversity in shaping our collective future.
